FAMILY SUPPORT PROJECT
Special Needs Support -February Schedule.
This free program offers support, information and encouragement to families raising pre-schoolers (ages 3-5 years) with special needs, through programs & activities.
Every parent knows how challenging it is to raise a child. But imagine handling those challenges without the support of extended family. Then imagine the added challenge of raising a child with a disability. Challenges become manageable thanks to support program.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES FOR JANUARYand FEBRUARY:
A 2 part toilet training workshop
When: January 30th and February 6th,
Times: 5:45pm - 8pm
Location: The Shaker Family Center, located at 19824 Sussex Road in Shaker Heights.
Who: Families with preschoolers with
special needs. Parents who
have children with special needs in Kindergarten and Grade 1 who are
also invited to attend.
Space will be limited so
participation will be first come first served.
PROGRAM IS FREE AND CHILDCARE WILL BE PROVIDED.
PLAYGROUP for parents and children with special needs. EVERY Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Play and Learn Station on the 2nd floor of the Shaker Heights Library on Lee and Van Aken. This is an opportunity for your children to socialize with other preschoolers and for parents/guardians to meet others who are raising preschoolers with special needs. FREE!

Friday, February 24th: 1:30 to 2:00 PM: Parent Suppory Group. Tim Lewicki, Manager of Intake and Eligibility for the County Board of Development Disabilities will discuss services (including summer camp) eligible for funding through the Family Resource Program.
Friday, January 27th: 2:00 to 2:30 PM: Story Time with Miss. Virginia.

FAMILY FUN FRIDAYS AT THE PLAY AND LEARN STATION
Our facilitated playgroup meets on a drop-in basis EVERY Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Play and Learn Station on the 2nd floor of the Shaker Heights Library on Lee and Van Aken. FREE! This is an opportunity for your children to socialize with other preschoolers and also for parents/guardians to meet other parents/guardians who are raising preschoolers with special needs.

This is an opportunity for children to socialize with other preschoolers and for parents/guardians to meet other parents/guardians who are raising preschoolers with special needs. Special activities 2nd, 3rd and 4th Fridays of every month.
Parent Support Group
Coming in April: 3 part series on the ABS's of IEPs Part 1: Understanding Evaluations and Assessments, Part 2: The Nuts and Bolts of Individual Education Plans (IEP's, Part 3: Communicating Effectively with your school district. Dates to be announced
Coming in May: Transition to Kindergarten: A parents' view: Hear a panel of parents whose children with special needs have already transitioned to Kindergarten,share their experience through the process and their tips for survival. They will tell you what worked, what didn't and what they would do differently if they knew then what they know now! Dates to be announced.
Monthly Parent Support Group to offer parent to parent support and an opportunity to share information, emotions and common concerns with other parents. 4th Friday of every month, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM, at Shaker Heights Main Library. Children are supervised by playroom teachers while parents meet.
Monthly Parent Education Programs to provide information on specific disabilities, services available, and how parents can help their child develop to the fullest. See website for current month’s program.
Individual IEP Assistance to help families make informed educational decisions about their child.

RESPONSIVE TEACHING SERIES

RESPONSIVE TEACHING SERIES
8 Week Parenting Series using Responsive Teaching Curriculum developed by Dr. Gerald Mahoney of CWRU for use with families with young children. The curriculum focuses on strategies parents can use in their everyday interaction with their children to influence their child’s development in three areas: Cognition, Communication, and Social Emotional functioning. An Intervention Specialist from the Center on Intervention for Children and Families at Case Western Reserve University is the instructor and coach. |
