About Family Connections

Shaker Family Center was established in 1992 by a community-wide task force that explored new uses for the recently closed Sussex Elementary School. The task force understood the need for quality early childhood services as well as for comprehensive, year-round programs for families with young children. As a result of their research, they recommended the facility be the home for preschools to serve children of all abilities, from diverse socio-economic and racial-ethnic backgrounds.

A nonprofit organization would be created to manage the facility, sublease it to other nonprofit early childhood organizations and provide family support and parent educational activities to the mix of services.  Shaker Family Center, now called Family Connections, was formed and has remained in the same location since its inception.
